Flying Magnetic Art Kit

Grade K-2nd

Grab the magnet (the black circle/disc) inside your kit and explore the different objects it sticks to in your home. What happens? Did the magnet stick to the wall? What about the refrigerator? What did you notice about the items the magnet stuck to? Were they all made of a similar material?

Magnets are attracted to special metals (typically metals with iron in them). Did you notice that as your magnet got closer to different objects it felt like the object was pulling you toward it? Try it out!

Magnets, just like the Earth – which is actually a giant magnet- have two poles. A north pole and a south pole. These poles push and pull towards each other. The pull from the north pole of the magnet and the south pole of the magnet create a magnetic field (an area where magnetic objects are pulled toward the magnet).

In your project you have a metal paper clip (a magnetic object) that is attracted (pulled toward) your magnet. Because the magnet’s field is bigger than the magnet itself, if you put the paper clip on the outside of the magnetic field (using the fishing line) the magnet will pull the paperclip so that it looks like it is flying!

Required Materials

  • magnet
  • double sided adhesive
  • box
  • paper clip
  • fishing line
  • tape
  • markers

Step-By-Step Instructions

Step 1

Draw a picture (background) on the inside bottom of the box.

Step 2

Draw a small “flying” object slightly larger than the paperclip on the white paper that will compliment (match) the background on your box.

Step 3

Cut out the “flying” object.

Step 4

Attach the magnet to the top inside wall of the box using the double-sided adhesive.

Step 5

Tie one end of the fishing line to the paper clip.

Step 6

Tape the “flying” object to the paper clip. The fishing line should hang down from the top of your drawing.

Step 7

Attach the opposite end of the fishing line to the bottom inside wall of the box (opposite the magnet).

Step 8

Adjust the line so that the paper clip is being pulled by the magnet but far enough away that the magnet doesn’t touch the paper clip. Now your object should fly!
